Electroplay 101 Class Handout
A brief note: with the exception of TENS units, electroplay is very much a ‘you get what you pay for’ kind of thing – this is not really something where you want to buy the cheapest Solid State Wand, or estim device or dog training collar – they tend not to be very good. This is not to say there aren’t ways to save money (used violet wands on ebay, TENS units, etc) of course

Violet Wand:
Violet Wands come in two types: Solid State and Tesla/Traditional. There are advantages and disadvantages to each – the one we showed off in the class was a Tesla wand.
Solid State wands tend to be cheaper and can run for an extended length of time without issues. It can be held at any angle without affecting the intensity. They produce a binary electrical wave and so they can feel sharper but not everyone can perceive the differences. Up until recently a lot of these were built with metric electrode adapter sizes, however most electrodes are built for traditional wands, so make sure to check that any electrode you purchase is compatible with your wand.

KinkLabs Neon Wand, Nova Wand
Tesla wands are strong and have a more natural feeling shock. ALL modern Tesla wands are in fact rebranded Neon Gas Leak detectors originally made by a company called ElectroTechnic. You can buy them in a bunch of places but honestly everyone is just marking them up from the company so I would buy directly from them (or buy a used one on ebay). The electrode it comes with is not safe for kink purposes and should be discarded. The BD-10AS is the model with the thumbswitch which we showed in class. Some people prefer without and lately I’ve heard some people talking about the BD20 being a better unit for kink play because it can run much longer and does not suffer from angle issues.
You can buy electrodes for both from a variety of places, but sadly my favorite place seems to have closed during COVID. Violet Wand Store carries a good variety of standard electrode styles, DV8 carries some awesome and unique accessories and the plate style body contact cable I prefer.
Safety Notes:
Violet Wands are pretty safe but because of the direct connection to your electrical system, you should do at least some of the following:
- ALWAYS ensure you are purchasing and using spark gapped electrodes.
- Avoid using a Violet Wand anywhere with very shoddy electrical wiring (this is less commonly an issue these days)
- Don’t play during electrical storms
- Use a GFCI Outlet or adapter
Except for specialty electrodes you should not insert a violet wand into bodily orifices or do any play internal to the body as it can dry out mucous membranes.
Check for any metal that is near but not permanently pressed against the body (piercings are fine but things like underwire in bras) since it may cause a shock point.
Remove all electronics from your person before using a Violet Wand, as it could damage them

For the most part, TENS units are cheap and readily available medical devices that do not need a prescription. I prefer the TENS 7000 because of the LCD display. You can purchase them from Amazon or any medical supply place (useful to use your HSA $$s!) and pads are available from Amazon for fairly cheap.

Safety Notes:
While a lot of online documentation suggests not to use a TENS unit above the waist, obviously people do constantly and in fact the most common use of a TENS unit is for muscle relief in the shoulder and arms. There is no evidence that anyone has ever been seriously harmed by the use of a TENS unit, even when run directly from front to back on the chest.

ET-312B
Now back in production! The company that used to make the fantastic ET-312B has licensed out the design and a company is producing a new device called the MK-312B. I haven’t personally tried one but by all reports this is a good upgrade to the original.
Dog Training Collars
We strongly recommend a high quality dog shock collar. Don’t buy a cheap one on Amazon, they don’t make great contact which can cause big shocks, and can be unreliable.

Safety Notes:
Because these are intended for animals with much thicker skins, you likely should not use these around your neck but instead a thigh or upper arm is a better choice.
